The Tale of Despereaux Chapter 41 Summary

The Tears of a King

  • When Despereaux enters Princess Pea's room, he finds the king sitting there weeping on his daughter's bed. He's holding the princess's tapestry.
  • Even though Despereaux is terrified of the king, he approaches him and asks to speak to him. He reminds the king of their last encounter.
  • He tries to tell the king about how Roscuro kidnapped the princess and took her to the dungeons, but the king refuses to believe him. He thinks that Despereaux is a liar because he's a rodent, just like the rats.
  • The king refuses to listen. Despereaux realizes that he'll have to take matters into his own hands. He decides that maybe the suit of armor in his dream was empty because it was waiting for him to fill it. Maybe Despereaux is a knight in shining armor.
