The Tale of Despereaux Chapter 28 Summary

To the Castle

  • Years pass, and Mig continues to live with the awful Uncle while dreaming about one day becoming a princess. She also wishes that she could see the royal family again.
  • Her wish to see them comes true when the king outlaws soup in the kingdom after the queen's death.
  • A soldier rides around the kingdom picking up everyone's kettles, soup bowls, and spoons so that they can be thrown into the dungeons. That seems a little extreme…
  • When the soldiers come to collect Uncle's soup things, he lets slip that he owns Mig. The soldiers say that they'll have to take her too; the king do doesn't allow people to own another human being.
  • The soldiers intend to bring Mig back to her family, but she doesn't know where her father is; and besides…he sold her. She's not super into the idea of a family reunion.
  • So the soldiers tell her that they'll go to the castle instead. Mig is perfectly happy with this idea, because she'd love to see the castle and dream about becoming a princess some more.
  • She's pleased when the soldiers say that she'll be a servant and not a slave. It's one step closer to her dream of being a princess.
