Great Expectations Chapter Forty-Six Summary

  • Pip gets lost trying to find Clara’s apartment building. He’s not familiar with the wharf/shipyard area of town. Finally he finds the right place in a little neighborhood called Mill Pond Bank
  • As soon as Pip goes inside, he hears growling noises. Herbert tells him Clara’s dad is a mean alcoholic with gout, and that she has to take care of him all the day long.
  • Clara is really pretty and she looks like a fairy that her father the ogre has captured. Pip can tell that she and Herbert and like two peas in a pod.
  • Herbert takes Pip up to Magwitch’s room. There’s something soft about Magwitch, and Pip is totally warming up to him. Pip warns him that he is in danger of being discovered, and that they must be very careful. Pip tells him that they won’t be able to see each other or talk very often, but that Herbert will communicate between them.
  • Magwitch/Provis goes by a new name: Mr. Campbell.
  • Pip and Herbert hatch a plan to get Magwitch out of town. Pip will start rowing. A LOT. He will make it a habit, so that one day, when Pip rows by Mill Pond Bank, he can pick Magwitch up and the two and row away to a big ship that will take them to another country.
  • Pip likes this idea, but he can’t shake the feeling that he’s being watched.
