My Sister's Keeper Part 1 / Chapter 3 Summary

How It All Goes Down

Sara, 1990

  • Back in the past, Sara wonders why her daughter, Kate, is bruising so easily, like a three-day-old banana.
  • She takes Kate to the hospital, where she has to undergo a series of painful blood tests, and after a lot of waiting, they find out that Kate has leukemia.
  • The doctor is at least encouraging, saying, "Kids beat the odds. Every single day" (1.3.78).
  • Driving home, they play a game to take Kate's mind off everything. "What does the tiger say?" (1.3.88) "What does the elephant say?" (1.3.90) "What does the fox say?"
  • That night, Sara wonders if Kate's leukemia is all her fault because she took her happy family for granted.
