My Sister's Keeper Part 3 / Chapter 4 Summary

How It All Goes Down

Sara, 1990-1991

  • Sara and Brian are interviewed on television because of their genetically engineered child.
  • They clarify that they "don't want a superbaby; we just want to save our daughter's life" (3.4.46)—and everyone returns the Superman-logo onesies they bought for the baby shower.
  • As soon as Anna is born, before she's even named, the umbilical cord blood is cryogenically frozen for when Kate is ready to receive it.
  • Sara practices injecting oranges with a syringe because Kate will need injections after the transplant. (Note: Never drink fresh-squeezed OJ at the Fitzgerald family home.)
  • Later, they watch the blood being tubed into Kate, and hope for the best.
