Sarah, Plain and Tall Chapter 3 Summary

  • On the day Sarah's scheduled to arrive, Jacob wakes up early and gets dressed very carefully, then he drives off in the horse and wagon to the train station, which is a pretty long trip.
  • Throughout the day, Anna and Caleb do their chores quietly, too excited and anxious to talk or goof around.
  • Caleb keeps asking Anna questions, like whether or not Sarah will like them, or if she'll bring them the sea. Anna just answers his questions patiently and assures him that Sarah will be very nice and is bound to like their family.
  • Then the dogs start barking and the kids look outside to see the wagon coming toward the house. Caleb shouts that he can even see a yellow bonnet.
  • As promised, Sarah is indeed plain and tall, and she tells the children that she's brought her cat, Seal, and something for them from the sea.
  • Then she hands the children their gifts: a moon snail shell for Caleb and a sea stone for Anna. When Anna watches Sarah looking over the plains, though, she can see that she's already lonely and having a hard time being so far away from the sea.
  • Jacob takes Sarah's bags and leads her into the house. As Anna watches them go inside, she thinks about how much she wants Sarah to love their family, and how much she wishes they had a sea for her.
