Character Analysis
There are a whole bunch of wizards in the academy, and we never learn most of their names. They wear robes, and they give the boys orders and lead them around the tunnels. They seem oblivious to how much the boys are suffering—or maybe they just don't care. Probably they went through it at some point, too, and we can see where that kind of physical and psychological torture would de-sensitize you to the suffering of others.
