The Returning Chapter 8 Summary

Diido's Revenge

  • Gaida drags Diido to the hut of the village's wise woman, Selena—even though Gaida's hubby thinks Selena isn't all there, she still wants to go.
  • When they get there, Selena orders Gaida to leave… without Diido. Since Selena's a scary woman, Gaida obeys orders. Stat.
  • When Selena questions Diido about this, she claims it's because she's nothing but trouble to Gaida. She doesn't need an invitation to flee.
  • By the time the sun goes down, Selena tells Diido that things will be getting rowdy outside.
  • Diido goes outside and asks everyone which song they want to hear, and they choose the one about the river god called "The Lament of the Pearl Diver;" everyone listens.
  • Selena tells Diido that she's useful, and Diido confesses that she never liked Gaida. They pick and cook yams and chitchat along the way, then Selena tells Diido to come back when she's not so loud.
  • As she's walking, Diido notices two boys following her, giggling. She tells them to scram, and then she gets hit in the head with something smelly and sticky—it's poop. Gross.
  • She runs into the river to wash off, and Selena gives her a dress to wear that she made for a wedding but never used. Since the war, there haven't been many weddings.
  • The next day, Diido decides to make the people pay who did this to her. She's sick of being mocked and pranked.
  • We learn—through innuendo and off-handed comments—that the soldiers use Diido as an object to um, satisfy themselves. They treat her like their prostitute, even though she doesn't want to be one.
  • She stops in front of the chicken coop and starts throwing stones at the birds. The chickens make a run for it—down the hill and away from the camp.
  • Everyone is angry. How could she get rid of the village's chickens? Selena tells Diido to hide in the forest until everyone calms down.
  • Diido goes and knows no one will follow her—no one's ever cared about her anyway—and she sings "The Lament of the Pearl Diver" as she goes.
