Boy Meets Boy Chapter 22 Summary

Meet Me at the Cemetery Gates

  • The Dowager's Dance committee meets at the town cemetery at sundown.
  • This is a way-cool cemetery: every grave has a locked box, and the gatekeeper will unlock the box for you if you ask.
  • Inside every box is a book.
  • Some of the books contain the deceased person's own handwriting. Other books contain notes left by the living.
  • Paul and committee are going to take some quotes from the books and rubbings of the tombstones and use them for decorations.
  • Infinite Darlene and Trilby Pope are there, arguing as usual; Amber, the only Club Kid who showed up, asks them if they're always like that.
  • They say yes they are, and Amber tells them they need to get over it.
  • Trilby makes a snide remark about Amber's Old Navy overalls and storms off. Infinite Darlene storms off in the opposite direction.
  • Paul decides Amber is pretty awesome and they stand and talk for a while, until they notice a flash.
  • Someone is in the graveyard taking pictures.
  • That someone is Noah.
  • Infinite Darlene lets Paul in on a little secret: she asked Noah to come take some shots for the dance.
  • Paul walks over to talk to Noah, which they do awkwardly until Kyle comes running up to say he wants to show Paul something.
  • Noah walks away to take more photos.
  • The thing Kyle wants to show Paul is the Dowager's crypt, which is painted fifty-two shades of blue on the inside.
  • Kyle has lit the crypt with candles and is drawing the Dowager's portrait from the photo hanging on the wall.
  • When Kyle puts his hand on Paul's back, Paul turns around and Kyle kisses him—Paul backs away and tells Kyle he's not interested in him like that anymore.
  • Kyle is disappointed and tells Paul it must be so easy to be him, always knowing exactly who he is and what he wants.
  • Paul tries to tell Kyle that's not how it is at all, but Kyle blows out all the candles and walks away with tears in his eyes.
