Because of Winn-Dixie Chapter 22 Summary

  • Opal introduces Otis to everybody. Even though Otis accidentally smacks himself in the head with his guitar as he sets the pickles on the ground, nobody laughs. In fact, everyone is super nice to him. Especially Gloria Dump, who makes eye contact with him and smiles. Otis can't help but grin back.
  • Even though the Dewberrys haven't arrived, the preacher blesses the party with a prayer. Some things he gives thanks for are: summer nights, candlelight, good food, friends, "the task of loving each other the best we can, even as you love us" (22.16).
  • Everyone is quiet after the prayer (except Sweetie Pie, who is hun-gry).
  • At that moment, thunder rumbles, and before anyone has a chance to decide, well, anything, the rain comes "pouring down" (22.28).
