The Sign of the Beaver Chapter 19 Summary

  • Two days later, Attean's grandmother invites Matt to the village.
  • Matt doesn't quite believe it, not until Attean tells him Grandma was super-impressed that a white kid would do so much for a good-for-nothing Indian dog.
  • They're off to the village, where Grandma serves them fish stew and Attean then gives him a grand tour.
  • Matt pays special attention to the squaws' work and Attean answers his questions until he's bored to tears.
  • Then he takes Matt over to play some games with other boys. Matty boy joins in a gambling game, and soon realizes he'll have to give up something when he loses… but what?
  • Turns out that would be his shirt. His only shirt, to be precise. But so it goes.
  • Then Attean starts the boys in a game of lacrosse—Matt knows they're testing him to see what he's made of, so he gets totally into it.
  • Then they all wrestle in the river.
  • Before he leaves, Granny gets Attean to get Matt's shirt back for him, and she gives Matt a yummy cake of nuts and berries.
  • In the canoe, Good-for-Nothing dog hops in close to Matt's knees, and Attean tells him that the dog remembers that Matt saved him.
  • The dog lets Matt not only touch him, but give him a good ear scratch. Aw.
  • Attean leaves him at the bank, and Matt realizes that Attean trusts him to find his own way back.
  • As Matt tromps back to his cabin, he realizes that he "passed some sort of test. […] He had not disgraced Attean. […] And for the first time since his father had left him, he did not feel alone in the forest" (19.26). Yay.
