Pamela's parents are pious, hardworking people who have fallen on hard times through bad luck (and some nasty debts Pamela's brothers managed to run up). When Mr. B reforms and marries Pamela, their luck turns, and they end up with a yearly salary and a farm to manage for the rest of their lives.
