The Body of Christopher Creed Chapter 21 Summary

  • You might not believe it but off Torey goes into the dark woods alone. Yikes.
  • It is so dark that he gets scared, and he thinks that if he finds the body, people will think he murdered Chris and knew where the body was all along.
  • Turning to go home, Torey is surprised by the ghost of an Indian who beckons him to go to the burial ground.
  • He hops on top of the large rocks and looks around, scared out of his wits, confused, feeling crazy, and generally super creeped out.
  • He thinks about the whole situation and realizes that he will not find Chris's body because he is alive somewhere else.
  • He knows this because Chris did so many things (like smiling all the time and pretending he had a girlfriend) in order to survive his life that he it makes more sense for him to have left town in order to really live.
  • Torey moves to leave but the tipsy rock topples on top of his leg, crushing it.
  • Slowly, Torey sees bodies wrapped in blankets and covered in gold that definitely look like ancient Lenape Indian dead… and then he sees one body that doesn't.
  • Studying it in horror, he sees that the body is Chris's, though he can't see the face because it's covered in blood. It doesn't reek of death either, which is weird, but Torey doesn't have time to think it through.
  • Right before his eyes, Chris's body begins to peel up and blow away; it sounds like it is burning. Torey screams in terror at this sight and the burning smell.
  • He can't move because his leg is pinned under a boulder and the stench of fire and burning is driving him crazy.
  • Out of nowhere, Ali shows up and rescues him.
