We Were Liars Chapter 40 Summary

  • Time for another fairytale: A king has three daughters (you saw that coming), and his first grandchild is a pocket-sized girl, who is forgotten when other, normal-sized grandchildren arrive.
  • One day, the princess leaves her tiny bed, where she spends most of her time, and goes to the palace library.
  • She falls in love with books and starts going to the library all the time.
  • One day, while reading, she sees a mouse standing in the library wearing a velvet jacket.
  • The mouse tells the princess they read the same way, by walking back and forth across the pages.
  • The princess falls in love with the mouse, as bookish girls have done with bookish boys throughout the ages, but when the princess introduces the mouse to her family, they're afraid of him. Everybody screams.
  • The princess leaves the palace and runs away with the mouse.
  • Moral of the story? If you want to be around people who aren't afraid of mice, you can't live in a palace.
