What’s Up With the Ending?

At the end of We Were Liars, Cadence returns to the beginning. She repeats the passage that opens Chapter 2:

My full name is Cadence Sinclair Eastman.

I live in Burlington, Vermont, with Mummy and three dogs.

I am nearly eighteen. (87.38-40)

Then she tells us that she perpetrated "a foolish, deluded crime that became a tragedy" (87.44-46). For a long time, she says, she didn't know what she'd done, but now there must be more to know about her—she'll create something more. She closes the book with another passage from Chapter 2:

My full name is Cadence Sinclair Eastman.

I suffer migraines. I do not suffer fools.

I like a twist of meaning.

I endure. (87.52-55)

When she first tells us she likes a twist of meaning, we're not sure what she's talking about, but at the end it becomes clear that we've just read one of the twistiest, turniest books in young adult literature.
