The Tale of Despereaux Chapter 21 Summary

The Queen's Last Words

  • The queen loves soup and eats it at almost every meal. The particular soup that she has for this banquet is delicious, and when Roscuro lands in it, he takes a few sips.
  • Princess Pea starts shouting and pointing at her mother's bowl of soup, and the merriment screeches to a halt. Everyone turns to look and sees a rat sitting in the queen's soup.
  • The queen sees the rat too and screams—and then immediately falls down, dead as a doornail. The king is grief-stricken and calls for someone to come help her.
  • Roscuro realizes that it's probably not a good idea for him to stick around, so he climbs out of the soup bowl and sneaks out during all the commotion.
  • But before he goes, he turns around and catches Princess Pea's eye. And the look that she gives him is not forgiving or kind—it's obvious that she despises him.
  • Even though Roscuro is supposedly an evil rat without a heart, that look breaks his heart and makes him very, very sad and guilty.
