The Tale of Despereaux Chapter 36 Summary

What Mig Carried

  • As Despereaux sleeps, Roscuro's ready to put his awful plan into motion. After all, he's been waiting a long time to get his revenge against Pea.
  • First, he chews the rope that's tied to Gregory's ankle so that the jailer gets lost in the mazes of the dungeons. That's not very nice.
  • And then late that night, he gets Mig to carry him in her pocket to the princess's room. She also has a candle and the knife that she used to cut off Despereaux's tail.
  • Mig isn't terribly good at being on a secret mission, and Roscuro has to remind her to whisper instead of shouting all the time.
  • He has her go over the plan, which involves her threatening the princess with a knife but not hurting her. When Mig is a princess, Princess Pea will be her lady in waiting because that's what she deserves, according to Roscuro.
  • Mig thinks that they'll take the princess to the dungeons, where she'll have lessons in being a servant while Mig has lessons in being a princess. Then they'll return to the castle and everyone will assume that Mig is the princess while Princess Pea is a servant.
  • This is a completely preposterous plan, and Roscuro knows it. His true plan—which he doesn't share with Mig—is to trap the princess in the dungeons and to keep her in the dark forever.
