What Cook Was Stirring
- Despereaux starts rolling his spool of thread through the castle, which is pretty hard because he's such a tiny mouse. By the time he makes it to the kitchen, he's shaking with exhaustion.
- Because it's the middle of the night, he expects the kitchen to be empty, but when he gets there he finds the cook.
- Then he realizes something even more shocking—the cook is stirring a pot of soup, even though soup has been outlawed in the kingdom.
- But Despereaux doesn't have time to waste standing here and watching the cook make soup. He's got a princess to save.
