The Tale of Despereaux Chapter 29 Summary

Start with the Cursy and Finish with the Thread

  • On the first day of her new job, Mig is told by Louise—the head of the serving staff—to deliver a spool of red thread to the princess. She reminds her to curtsy because she'll be in the presence of royalty.
  • Mig knocks at the princess's door and waits. Princess Pea calls for her to enter, but because of Mig's bad ears, she doesn't hear and just knocks again.
  • Princess Pea flings the door open and Mig is so startled that she drops the thread and tries to curtsy. But she steps on the spool and falls over instead.
  • Princess Pea just laughs and thanks Mig for delivering the spool of thread. For some reason, she says, she keeps losing her red thread—it just disappears from her room.
  • She shows Mig what she's working on, which is a tapestry that shows a history of her world. It includes her mother, the queen, who died while eating soup.
  • Mig tells the princess that her mother died too, and they bond over their shared loss. They also figure out that they're both 12 years old.
  • Mig tells Princess Pea about how she saw her riding on a white horse so long ago, and says that she wants to be a princess someday. The princess has nothing to say about that particular ambition.
  • When Mig comes down the stairs, Louise is not pleased with her because she took way too long to deliver the thread. She gives Mig—you guessed it!—a good clout to the ear.
