Eve (Evening Primrose)

Character Analysis

Eve likes to read, and she wears spectacles. She's eleven at the start of the book, and she often goes along with whatever Delphinium is saying, though she's also quite practical. For instance, when Keeper says he's from the time of the High King D'Eathe, Eve's response is: "No one can live for over two hundred years… It's impossible" (8.4). And she's totally correct in this assessment.

We know Eve's a bookworm since Azalea makes reference to stuff happening "like in one of Eve's storybooks" (4.42). We at Shmoop approve of anyone who likes books. Oh, and she tends to be one of the sisters who's most into following the rules. Like when Azalea gets the girls to do a dance early in mourning, even Eve joins in, but not before saying: "We must be breaking at least fifty rules" (5.42). Maybe someday Eve will learn to let loose a little.
