The Great Wide Sea Chapter 19 Summary

  • The boat's chugging along through the Bahamas. Dad's hand still hasn't fully healed, by the by. They boys have learned to run the boat on their own, more or less.
  • One day Dad announces that he wants to sail around the world. Forget a year on the water. He's in this for life.
  • The boys aren't so excited about this idea. They want to go home.
  • There's no time to talk, though. A storm's brewing. The crew prepares the boat for extreme weather.
  • That night, Ben tries to talk to his dad. He's interrupted by a thump. Another boat has crashed into the Chrysalis.
  • The storm's raging and this other boat keeps crashing into the Chrysalis. Finally, it motors away.
  • Dad checks out the damage. It doesn't look too bad. But he's ready to put his "sail forever" plan into action. He wants to sail to Bermuda so they can restock.
  • Ben doesn't like this plan at all. He's pretty vocal about it. So vocal that Dad ends up slapping him.
  • Dad pukes into the ocean. Wow, he's really upset. He tells Ben that he's lonely.
  • The next morning, they're off to Bermuda. But Ben says they never made it there. He also says they lost their father.
  • Hmm, what does "lost" mean? Probably nothing good.
