The Ear, the Eye, the Arm Chapter 13 Summary

  • If the She Elephant plans to sell Tendai and his siblings to the Masks, then they need to find a way out of there—stat.
  • He goes looking for Rita and Kuda and realizes that they blend into the background now. Just like the people who were hiding in the darkness when they first arrived, Tendai, Kuda, and Rita all look like vlei people now.
  • Rita is listening to Granny tell a story about defeating some elephant-eared man in a bar. She's really interested, but Tendai wants to talk to her.
  • He confides in her that they will be sold to the Masks, and she gasps.
  • Kuda hears. He comes over and asks who the Masks are and why they would buy people.
  • Rita explains that the Masks are dangerous gangsters who hurt people. They can't go with the Masks, regardless of how dirty it is down in the tunnels.
  • Tendai knows they must escape, but he also knows they'll need help.
  • Luckily, Trashman is game. He plops Kuda on his shoulders and starts making a beeline for the exit.
  • Granny notices, but doesn't bother sounding the alarm. She hates everybody, but she hates criminals the most, so she won't be the one to tattletale on them to a kidnapper.
  • Rita and Tendai follow close behind.
  • At first, they think they'll manage to get away with it, but then the She Elephant comes running after them with an axe.
  • The kids run as fast as they can until they make it out of the tunnels and into the city. There, they go to the bus stop with Trashman.
