The Ear, the Eye, the Arm Chapter 39 Summary

  • Tendai watches the scene from inside the mask.
  • He sees a weird looking man (Arm) with a gun heading toward him. Yes—he can finally be freed.
  • Suddenly, though, the guy stops and falls to the ground. Oh no… the Big-Head mask got him.
  • We learn that the Big-Head mask is the oldest and most powerful in the tribe, and hardly anyone can fight it.
  • Just then, the mhondoro possesses Tendai. Sure, he's a little young, but he's a warrior.
  • The mhondoro and Big-Head mask duke it out, and a bunch of spirits join in.
  • Tendai can tell that the mhondoro loves this land and these people, even the She Elephant.
  • Yes, she's rough around the edges, but those vlei people love her and she belongs here. It took Tendai to remind her of that somehow.
  • The battle continues until the mhondoro defeats the Big-Head mask.
  • The ambassador lays face down on the floor and won't get up.
  • As all of this is happening, the mhondoro leaves Tendai, but promises he'll be around.
  • Before he leaves, he tells Tendai he has talent.
