The Ear, the Eye, the Arm Chapter 34 Summary

  • Ear, Eye, and Arm get to Mrs. Horsepool-Worthingham's pad just after the She Elephant leaves.
  • They catch the ladies before they leave and get to hear all about what went down in the garden. So that's why it's such a mess…
  • At first Mrs. Horsepool-Worthingham tries to play it cool and brush off the detectives' questions.
  • Before long, though, it's clear she's lying. Her friends point out that there were children here, and Mrs. Horsepool-Worthingham comes clean about everything.
  • Arm is completely ticked off. They've missed the kids by only a few minutes—again. This keeps happening.
  • Based on the description of the kidnapper, the detectives figure it has to be the She Elephant.
  • It seems like they are right back to where they started on day one.
  • Mrs. Matsika arrives and they fill her in.
  • They notice the She Elephant accidentally dropped a souvenir from the Mile-High MacIlwaine when the dogs bit her.
  • That doesn't make sense. How would she get into a place like that?
  • Arm points out that it could be from one of her clients since she sells kidnapped kids to some rich people.
  • Of course that makes Mrs. Matsika upset. And she's not the only one.
  • Sekai starts crying when she gets a glimpse of the Starlight Room elevator from Arm's mind.
  • Arm asks if Mrs. Matsika would mind taking her home for a while, and she agrees.
  • There's just one condition: The Mellower isn't allowed anywhere near the baby. Agreed.
  • It occurs to Arm that he can never fall in love. The other detectives might find wives who can overcome—or even appreciate—Ear and Eye's supernatural abilities, but not him. People's minds can't be so intertwined. It's dangerous and confusing.
  • Mrs. Matsika leaves, but not before saying that it'll be Tendai's birthday tomorrow.
