Out of the Dust Chapter 29 Summary

Hope in a Drizzle

  • (Psst… It's summer now, and we're still hanging out in 1934.)
  • Meanwhile, back at the ranch, the Kelby farm gets a quarter inch of rain, which both gives new seeds a start underground and helps Ma's mood. She has been longing for it to rain so much she won't stop talking about it.
  • When the rain does start, Ma stands away from the road, where she thinks no one can see her, with no clothes on. Billie Jo spots her though, and watches her enjoy the rain against her round stomach—again she finds her mother "dazzling."
