- Daddy finds some money Ma was hiding in the kitchen and goes out and gets drunk, leaving Billie Jo with the task of taking care of her. Because of Billie Jo's hand injuries, this is impossible—she can't aim the water into her mouth and it gets in Ma's unhealed burns instead. Understandably, Billie Jo is angry with her dad and feels helpless to ease Ma's pain.
