The 5th Wave Chapter 36 Summary

  • Instead of talking about their predicament, Evan and Cassie talk about how their lives were before. He had a girlfriend, Lauren. She's dead now, of course.
  • Cassie fibs and says her boyfriend was Ben Parish. We know she only had a crush on him.
  • She's having a difficult time with rehab. Her leg still hurts a lot. Still, she's making progress.
  • Evan is also teaching her how to shoot. She wants to go hunting with him, but she's not well enough yet.
  • Evan goes hunting ever night. For what? Cassie wonders, since he never seems to come back with much.
  • He admits that he only sleeps a few hours a day. He's not tired, though.
  • Often, Cassie and Evan stay up late talking. A frequent topic of conversation is Sammy, and how Cassie plans to rescue him.
  • Evan is super-skeptical about her plan. He thinks it's not developed enough.
  • One night, they get into a fight. Cassie accuses him of living to serve her. Evan says he's got to live for something.
  • Evan says he wants to go with Cassie to rescue Sammy. She's surprised.
  • They fight some more. Cassie stomps off.
  • Evan tries to come upstairs. Cassie tells him to get out. He waits outside the door like a creep. Again.
  • Through the door, he says he'll follow her if she leaves. What is she going to do, shoot him like she shot the Crucifix Soldier?
  • Cassie realizes that Evan has read her diary. She's mortified and furious.
  • Suddenly, she gets very, very creeped out. Evan seems… off. Something's not right, even if she can't put her finger on it.
  • Evan tells her she's not like a cockroach. She's like a mayfly: alive for a brief amount of time. That's not new, though. It's always been that way.
  • The mayfly line works, and now Cassie and Evan are making out. A lot.
  • They're making out. Cassie's crying, and Evan keeps saying she saved him. It's really intense.
