How we cite our quotes: (Chapter.Paragraph)
Quote #1
I'm talking about the Cassie I was before the Arrival, before the Others parked their alien butts in high orbit. … When I cry—when I let myself cry—that's who I cry for. I don't cry for myself. I cry for the Cassie that's gone. (2.23)
Cassie grieves for her former self—her pre-invasion self—like she was someone who died. In a way, she did.
Quote #2
The first rule of surviving the 4th Wave is don't trust anyone. It doesn't matter what they look like. (3.24)
Cassie is constantly questioning people's identities. That's what happens when your alien enemy wears a human face.
Quote #3
"I know you're human—" "How do you know?" … "Because if you weren't, you would have shot me already." (4.23-4.24)
This is the logic of the Crucifix Soldier, who correctly guesses that Cassie is human. She doesn't return the favor, though, blowing him away a few paragraphs later.
Quote #4
The old Cassie would have never done that. Already the Others were changing me into someone different, but I wanted to pretend that nothing had changed, especially me. (5.86)
Cassie sees a real disconnect between her identities before and after the attacks. Ben does, too.
Quote #5
I wasn't ready to admit the truth: It wasn't just the world that changed with the coming of the Others. We changed. I changed. (5.117)
Cassie says the alien invasion has changed everyone. Do you think that's true?

Dr. Pam tells Zombie that his friend Chris is actually an alien. Later we learn it was a trick.
Quote #7
It had only been four years since his Awakening, and he still fought against seeing the world through human eyes. (31.27)
Evan wasn't born knowing that he was an alien. That knowledge didn't hit him until he was about 15 years old.
Quote #8
Who is this guy? All of a sudden I've got a bad case of the jitters. Something is seriously wrong here. (36.105)
Cassie pretty much figures out Evan's secret identity long before he says it out loud. Why can't she admit it to herself?
Quote #9
Zombie was born on the morning I left the convalescent ward. Traded in my flimsy gown for a blue jumpsuit. Assigned a bunk in Barracks 10. Whipped back into shape by three squares a day and brutal physical training…. (42.5)
After the alien invasion, Ben Parish became Zombie, a brutal killing machine. But there may be more traces of the old Ben there than he realizes.
