The Raven Boys Chapter 4 Summary

  • Adam Parrish has been Gansey's friend for over a year and is aware by now that being his friend involves certain peculiar things, including an obsession with the supernatural.
  • He waits outside Gansey's apartment—Monmouth—with Declan Lynch and his new girlfriend. Adam leads them up to the second floor and knocks on the door, apologizing for the messiness of the apartment.
  • When they step in, the girlfriend, Ashley, is obviously impressed. The place has super high ceilings, books scattered everywhere, and two walls made entirely of windows. Talk about fancy.
  • Gansey is sitting at an old desk, going through his journal as always. It's also clear that he's surrounded by a small replica of the town of Henrietta, and that the visitors have to walk through it to come say hello to him.
  • Declan introduces Gansey to Ashley as "Dick Gansey," and Gansey is not pleased. He doesn't exactly like to go by his first name for obvious reasons.
  • Gansey immediately launches into his tale of Glendower, a Welsh king with magical powers, and how he believes that Glendower is hidden somewhere in Henrietta. That's why Gansey decided to go to school in this town, after all: to find a magical, invincible king.
  • Noah, their other friend and Gansey's roommate (aside from Ronan), steps out and shakes Ashley's hand. When she remarks on how cold his hand is, he says that he's been dead for seven years, which makes her giggle.
  • That's when Ronan's door opens, and Declan immediately loses his genial manner. Ronan tells Ashley that she's got quite a guy with her—she'll have fun with him tonight and someone else will have fun with him tomorrow. Oh, snap.
  • Declan doesn't know what to say, so he just grabs Ashley and they leave. Gansey turns to Ronan after they leave and chides him for making them all look bad with his rude statement.
  • They decide that they're going to go to Nino's to get pizza, and then make an appointment with a local psychic to see if they can learn anything more. Noah refuses to go with them, which is pretty typical. He's a loner.
