Unforgiven Scene 12 Summary

  • Ned and Logan are riding slowly along. The two are talking about sex and masturbation.
  • Suddenly shots ring out. Will is knocked off his horse, and Ned dismounts.
  • Both men scramble for cover. Will has a bloody nose.
  • The two men speculate on why they're being shot at, but they can't figure it out (they don't appear to be in somebody's field).
  • The guy appears to be shooting at something much further away, nowhere near them.
  • Shots continue to ring out. This time, the bullets are headed in a different direction.
  • Neither man can determine what the hidden shooter is aiming at.
  • Will suspects it might be the Kid. He shouts to him, and asks him to stop shooting.
  • The men exchange a few more words, and the kid agrees to stop shooting.
  • Ned and Will collect their horses and walk over to the Kid. He says he was shooting them because he thought they were following him.
  • They were. Will reminds the Kid that if he changed his mind he was supposed to find him.
  • The Kid is annoyed because Will never said anything about having a partner (Ned).
  • Will tries to justify Ned's inclusion (there's two cowboys, they might have friends, it's better if three of them go on the hunt).
  • The Kid issues a cocky response and says he can handle the cowboys himself.
  • Will says Ned's a great shot, and Ned says he's a better shot than the Kid, who's terrible.
  • Ned grabs the Kid's rifle to take a look, but the Kid gives him an angry look, puts his hand on his pistol, and tells him to leave it alone.
  • Something is up. Either the kid is a terrible shot, or the rifle is bent. The Kid insists it's not bent.
  • The discussion then turns to money. The Kid doesn't want to split the money three ways.
  • Will and Ned make to leave. Will won't go without Ned.
  • The Kid realizes he needs Will, and asks what the payout will be if it's divided by three.
  • The scene shifts, and we see all three men riding together, a somewhat melancholy song playing in the background.
  • The song ends, and Will exclaims: "S***."
  • The Kid is bewildered. Ned explains.
  • There are storm clouds up ahead, which means, well, a storm is coming.
  • The Kid acts like a tough guy, and says he saw it. He rides on up ahead.
  • Ned rides after him. He starts talking about what a great shot he is.
  • He says he can hit the hawk that is flying overhead. The Kid looks up, and says he can hit it too.
  • Ned calls him out: "There ain't no hawk." He announces that the Kid "can't see for s***."
  • The Kid gets mad, takes Ned's canteen, throws it on the ground, and shoots it several times.
  • Okay, so the Kid can see a little bit, but how far? Ned asks him. The Kid gets really mad.
  • He approaches Ned and cocks his gun. Will rides up, and tells him to hold on.
  • They need to know because they're not going to be shooting canteens in Wyoming.
  • They finally get an answer: fifty yards.
  • Will says that'll do just fine.
