Unforgiven Scene 5 Summary

  • We're back at Will's place. He looks at a picture of what must be his deceased wife.
  • Then we're outside, and Will has his pistol. He practices shooting at an old can of some kind.
  • Apparently he's a little rusty because he misses, and he isn't even that far away. He shoots, and misses, several more times as his kids look on.
  • He stalks back inside. His daughter asks her brother, "Did Pa used to kill folks?" Her brother doesn't answer.
  • Will comes back out with a shotgun, and promptly shoots down the can. He goes back inside.
  • The next we see of him he's shaving. He pauses and looks outside where his wife is buried.
  • Shortly thereafter, he's out there putting flowers on her grave. He's all cleaned up now too.
  • The scene shifts and Will is getting ready to leave. His son has his horse ready for him.
  • Will tries unsuccessfully to get on the horse. The horse, as his son notes, isn't used to the saddle anymore, and neither is Will.
  • He says the horse is trying to get even with him for the "sins of my youth."
  • He departs, but not before giving his kids some basic instructions (keep the sick hogs separated, etc.).
