Unforgiven Scene 21 Summary

  • A group of cowboys is trying to brand a steer and it gets away.
  • One of them rides off after the steer. A shot rings out, and he and his horse fall down.
  • It's Davey, and he's pinned under his horse but alive. The other cowboys scramble for cover.
  • Up on the high ground, Ned, Will, and the Kid are posting up. Will says Ned only got his horse, and that he needs to finish the job.
  • The Kid is incredulous.
  • Meanwhile, Davey, whose leg is broken, manages to get out from under his horse.
  • Will is coaching Ned, telling him that he needs to take the shot.
  • The Kid is asking lots of questions. He's all worked up, and asks Ned if he's going to shoot or not.
  • Ned looks at Will, and shakes his head. He's lost his edge, or his nerve, or something.
  • Will takes the rifle, notes that he isn't very good with rifles, fires twice, and misses.
  • He asks Ned how many rounds he has left. Ned doesn't answer at first.
  • He seems shaken up. Will repeats the question. Two rounds left.
  • Will fires again and misses. Davey, who has been crawling this whole time, is almost to safety.
  • Will fires again, and hits Davey, just as he gets behind a bunch of rocks.
  • Will tells the Kid to reload the gun.
  • Davey can be heard down below, hollering about how he has been shot.
  • Up above, the Kid asks if the gang has killed Davey.
  • Ned looks up and at Will says: "We killed him, I guess."
  • Davey is in his death throes. After he shouts out that he's dying, the Kid shouts that he shouldn't cut up a woman if he doesn't want to die.
  • A shot rings out (the cowboys firing on Will & Co.'s position).
  • Davey, in immense pain, says he's really thirsty. He begs his friend Slim to bring him some water.
  • He's crying, and in pain.
  • Will can't take it. He shouts down to the others to bring Davey a drink of water. He says he's not going to shoot.
  • One of his pals brings him some water.
  • Up above, Ned, the Kid, and Will wait and listen as Davey slowly and pathetically dies.
