Lockdown Chapter 23 Summary

  • Reese is out, and Play's joking around with him. He thinks it feels good to just talk to people again. He now understands why people go crazy in solitary confinement.
  • King Kong is still acting feisty, and Reese wonders if he's going to have to stab him. Shmoop thinks this is a very bad idea.
  • In the rec room, Toon gives Reese a book. Toon says they're like brothers; then he tells a sad story about his real brother, who died. This is why Toon's parents are so bitter.
  • The next day, when Reese wakes up, he tries to make a new start.
  • At breakfast, the inmates get a real treat—eggs. Like, real ones, instead of the kind in a box.
  • Mr. Wilson comes in and tells Reese to come with him. Reese is worried that he's being sent upstate, and he's super nervous, but Mr. Wilson won't answer any of his questions.
  • Reese rides handcuffed in the back of the van for two hours. He tries to get his bearings by stealing glances out of the window. He thinks they're in the city. Reese begins to worry that someone in his family has died.
  • Reese realizes he's at the police precinct in his neighborhood. Now he's almost certain someone has died.
  • Reese is in a room waiting for questioning. He thinks that by keeping him waiting, the police are trying to make him uncomfortable. He's starting to realize this is not about someone having died.
  • He's not too worried about getting questioned, though, because he knows he hasn't done anything wrong (apart from what he's already in jail for, that is). He wonders if his brother has gotten involved in something bad.
  • Two cops finally come in. They read Reese his rights and tell him he's facing twenty years.
  • Whoa…what?
  • Freddy Booker, the guy Reese sold prescription pads to, said Reese stole and distributed drugs, too. Reese did not do these things. Unfortunately, though, an addict has died.
  • One cop says he thinks Freddy Booker is lying to save himself.
  • The cops keep talking about how Reese could go to jail for twenty years, or even life. Reese is freaking out as the cops casually discuss his bleak future.
  • The cops see that Reese isn't talking and they leave. Let Reese take the twenty years, they say. See if they care.
