Lockdown Chapter 7 Summary

  • Mr. Pugh is driving Reese to Evergreen. He asks if Reese said anything to Mr. Cintron about how he left the room. Reese didn't, even though he knows Mr. Pugh could've lost his job. Mr. P seems pleased.
  • Father Santoro reaches out to shake Reese's hand. But Reese is still in handcuffs.
  • Reese is working with Simi today, and they joke around with each other a little.
  • Today Reese will be collecting trash from people's rooms. Then he'll spend the rest of the day with Mr. Hooft, who's not feeling so hot.
  • Reese has a nice chat with Mr. Gonder—well, except for the part where Mr. Gonder is racist. Yikes.
  • Mr. Hooft's room is last. Reese collects the garbage and moves on.
  • Simi decides she's going to formally introduce Reese to Mr. Hooft. Her introduction includes the fact that Reese is in juvenile prison. Mr. Hooft is deeply unimpressed; he doesn't like criminals.
  • Simi's gone, and things are kind of awkward. Mr. Hooft retreats to the bathroom and Reese wonders if he's going to stay in there the rest of the day.
  • Mr. Hooft is back. He casually asks who Reese murdered, and Reese tries to explain that he didn't murder anyone. So Mr. Hooft asks who he raped. Reese says he's not a rapist, either.
  • Reese doesn't want to talk about what he did to land in jail, but Mr. Hooft demands answers. Mr. Hooft calls for Simi, who assures him that Reese isn't a murderer.
  • Finally Reese admits that he stole prescription pads for some other criminal named Freddy Booker. Good old Freddy snitched after he was picked up for something else.
  • Mr. Hooft explains that he doesn't like "colored people." It's nothing personal, though—it's, like, totally impersonal racism.
  • Reese knows it won't do any good to talk back, so he just takes it.
  • Mr. Hooft says that Reese's "people" have bad brains, which is why they were slaves. Yikes. Reese seriously wants to punch him in the face, but he manages to control himself.
  • The rest of the day passes uneventfully, and Reese goes back to Progress with Mr. Pugh.
