Character Analysis

Gary is a pretty minor character, just sort of hanging around to give another perspective on being a gay teen. While Tiny is big and bold and open, Gary is a little more reserved and critical of Tiny's decision to be so out and to stage Tiny Dancer. He also doesn't seem too thrilled that Tiny is dating his ex-boyfriend:

Gary runs his fingers through his hair and sighs. "Bad for the team, all your polyamory." (3.41)

Okay, so there are two things here: Gary is jealous, but he's also worried about how Tiny's actions reflect on the LGBTQ community at school. Maybe he's a little bit right? Maybe Tiny is giving hateful people fuel for their fires by being so fabulous? But Tiny's just being Tiny. He doesn't care about stereotypes or anything like that.

Importantly, Gary comes around in the end, right after Tiny and the ex-boyfriend break up. How convenient. Gary ends up playing the role of Phil Wrayson in Hold Me Closer and does an awesome job. In the last scene, he's even one of the people who stands up and says how much he appreciates Tiny Cooper. See? Everyone loves Tiny in the end. Even Gary.
