Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging Friendship Quotes

How we cite our quotes: (Chapter.Paragraph)

Quote #1

When I opened the door Jas just looked at me like I'm an alien. "You look like an alien," she says. She really is a dim friend. It's more like having a dog than a friend, actually. (1.113)

Okay, so Jas is really tactless here, right? But the thing is, it's not like Georgia shows her friend a whole lot of kindness in return. Sure, she only calls her a "dog" and "dim" in her diary, but those aren't exactly stellar reviews for someone who's supposedly her best friend.

Quote #2

My biggest worry of all is the bloody beret. I must consult with the gang to see what our plan is. (2.157)

Georgia cares a whole lot about her friends' opinions, in this case about their school uniform. While plenty comes between these girls, they're pretty unified around their hatred for the beret.

Quote #3

Jas sort of went red, so I thought I would shut-up. Jas doesn't get angry very often but she has a hefty kick. (2.181)

Jas gets mad at Georgia after she teases her about where Tom works. What's interesting about this moment, though, is that it's one of the few times Georgia is concerned about hurting Jas's feelings. Yes, her concern might be a bit selfish, but it's a start.

Quote #4

I CANNOT BELIEVE IT. Stabbed in the back by my so-called best friend. (4.452)

Loyalty is a big issue with these girls, and in this particular scenario, Georgia is responding to the news that Jas told Robbie she broke up with Tom (his bro) at Georgia's suggestion. Georgia feels like Jas threw her under the bus with her dream date. Georgia's so angry with Jas that she questions their friendship—"my so-called best friend" are some pretty harsh words.

Quote #5

Jas off all week. I'm worried about her now; she won't even speak to me on the phone. Even when I pretended to be Santa Claus. (5.628)

Jas starts missing school when her breakup with Tom finally starts to sink in, and here Georgia appears to be concerned about Jas's wellbeing. Guess this is during one of the girls' "on" phases…

Quote #6

"Jas what are you doing? What's the matter? Come on, tell me, your best pal." (6.648)

Jas is in bed, miserable over her break-up with Tom, so Georgia comes to visit her. Sure they might bicker about petty things, but when Georgia senses that her friend is truly down, she tries to help her back up.

Quote #7

She was putting Chap Stick on, pouting in the mirror […] she really has snapped, she thinks she looks like Claudia Schiffer. "I'm saying, it's only coffee for the moment. If anything else happens, of course I will tell you first." That's when I kicked her on the shin. HOW DARE SHE? That is it!!! I'm never speaking to her again. (7.722)

This is the biggest conflict between Jas and Georgia, and it almost tears them apart for good—there's even a bit of physical violence involved. You know what it's over, though? A boy. So while tempers run high here, they eventually cool. Boys aren't that important, after all…

Quote #8

I've made a list of my friends:

 I have 12 "close casuals,"

 20 "social only,"

and 6 "inner circle" (you know, the kind of friends who would cry properly at your funeral). (7.724)

This list is inspired by how peeved Georgia is with Jas for having coffee with Robbie. The nerve, we know. Still, we should probably point out that Georgia likes making lists about things that bother her… so maybe this is more venting than fact.

Quote #9

I am sorry that a boy has come between us, it will never happen again. I was stupid and didn't think of your feeling even though you are my best friend. If there is anything I can do to be your friend again, I will do it. (8.782)

This is from Jas's letter to Georgia apologizing for letting Robbie come in between them—a.k.a. the first time Jas expresses guilt over anything and apologizes. It's a good thing, too, since this is their biggest blow-out in the entire book.
