Westmark Chapter 26 Summary

  • A few days later, Mickle's been acknowledged as the princess, and she is adjusting to her new station. She now remembers everything that led to her being a street urchin—Theo thinks that the info was always there, but it was closed off in her mind and she relived her past in front of everyone.
  • Mickle recounts that she climbed the bell tower one day and Cabbarus kicked her hands until she fell into the water and was swept away. Mickle was rescued in the Fingers by an old man, whom she thought was her grandpa when she was a kid.
  • Now that she's an official princess, Mickle's going to have a lot of responsibilities. It turns out the bells woke her up when she collapsed—a sign of the stuff she always loved.
  • Theo admits he never hated anyone before he met Cabbarus. The king comes in and says that it was his fault Cabbarus rose so high in his household; he was even thinking of getting rid of Cabby before Augusta "died." Cabby is in prison and will be executed, but Theo intervenes and asks for him not to die—Theo doesn't want to be responsible for anyone's death, not even someone he loathes, though he leaves final judgment to Mickle.
  • Mickle says he should have to live with all his wrongdoing and go into exile, powerless, with Pankratz. Las Bombas intervenes and asks for his monetary reward, which the king grants him. When the group is ushered out, Theo's not sure how to handle his friendship with the princess. He also admits to Las Bombas that he's not as virtuous as he thought he was… and he seems to be okay with that.
  • The next day, LB and Musket claim their reward and set off. Theo stays at court, but sees little of Mickle; Dr. Torrens comes back after Cabbarus is taken down and recounts his journey. He also has a bit of proof that Mickle/Princess Augusta ended up in the Fingers. Torrens is named Chief Minister and the king has him pardon those who attacked the Nierkeeping garrison (Florian and his cohorts) and anyone unjustly prisoned by Cabby.
  • Torrens has something to give Theo from Florian, who was surprised and pleased that Theo brought down Cabbarus: It's a note from Florian that calls Theo his "Child" at last.
