Westmark Theme of Transformation

The times, they are a-changin'—or, in the case of Westmark, it's the people and their surroundings that are. Theo starts out as a naïve kid in the backwater town of Dorning, but by the novel's finale, he helps save the kingdom and rescue Mickle, who it turns out is the long-lost princess. Plus the kingdom itself transforms, shifting from tyrannical rule to—fingers crossed—benevolent monarchy by the book's end. In fact, we just might say that change as a general rule is only a good thing in this book… though Cabbarus might not agree.

Questions About Transformation

  1. How does Theo's opinion of himself change over the course of the book?
  2. How does Mickle transform herself, literally and figuratively?
  3. How does Las Bombas change himself from role to role?
  4. Are there any characters that don't evolve over the course of the book?

Chew on This

Try on an opinion or two, start a debate, or play the devil’s advocate.

Theo's life has been so sheltered that he can't help but change a ton once he leaves home.

The only character who doesn't change is Cabbarus, and because of this, the book argues that staying the same is a bad thing.
