The Fallen Star Chapter 4 Summary

  • Over the next few days, Alex continues to act like he'd rather be anywhere but near Gemma, while she continues to be weirdly drawn to him.
  • On Friday, Mr. Sterling has the class quiz each other on a deck of cards showing different constellations.
  • Aislin isn't paying attention and gets a slip to go to the counselor's office, thereby leaving Alex and Gemma alone at their table.
  • They just sit there and stare at each other while electricity and antagonism flow through them until Mr. Sterling calls them into the hallway and tells them that they need to start working together. Or else.
  • Gemma starts quizzing Alex on the cards and he talks to her in a totally condescending way. She loses it and tells him that he's being a jerk, and that if he doesn't want to work with her, then she won't try anymore.
  • He promises that he won't be a jerk anymore, and they work together in quiet peace… for now at least.
  • When the bell rings, Gemma immediately goes to the library to eat lunch—she's always been quite the loner.
  • She's perusing the shelves when she hears someone mention her name and starts eavesdropping. Alex and Aislin are in the library, and he's telling his sister all about the weird buzz that happens whenever he talks to Gemma.
  • They say something about a prophecy and are about to say more, but then Alex shushes Aislin; Gemma tries to sneak away before she's caught.
  • Instead of disappearing quietly, though, Gemma gets busted when the librarian comes up to her and asks if she needs help with anything.
  • When she turns around again, Alex and Aislin are gone. Too bad.
