Please Ignore Vera Dietz Part 1, Chapter 5 Summary

Thursday—Four to Close

  • It's past nine on a Thursday, and the closing crew is working. Vera has to drop off some orders, including one to Fred's Bar, which she doesn't like.
  • On her way out, she passes the other driver, James, who she has a crush on. He's twenty-three, a smoker, cute, and likes the same music as Vera. Sounds promising, huh?
  • Fred's Bar is creepy, and the people there stare and hardly ever tip. Vera drops off the pizzas and gets out of there fast.
  • She drives through town, thinking about how it's a mishmash of the haves and the have nots. There are big, beautiful Victorian houses and other areas where you can see the prevalence of poverty.
  • Vera goes through and drops off her other orders before heading off. She passes the big glowing pagoda, which is some kind of tourist attraction though Vera thinks it's a monstrosity.
  • On her way back to the shop, she drives past her house and sees the glow of the television. Her dad is home alone, where he keeps the television on so he doesn't feel so lonely. Weak.
