Please Ignore Vera Dietz is written from the first person perspective, which means that it often feels like the characters are simply casually talking to the reader instead of actually trying to achieve any literary style. Even when the Pagoda—an inanimate landmark—talks, it takes on a very conversational style and attitude. For example:

Do you have any idea how old watching idiot kids drink and do drugs up here on the rocks is getting? The funniest part is, they all think they're more cool than their parents were, and their parents did the same crap. (3.11.1)

Um… the pagoda has some serious attitude. And, as with the book as a whole, shares its thoughts and feelings in a super conversational style.
