Go Ask Alice Chapters 21-30 Summary

Chapter 21: January 4

  • They made it to the new house… and things haven't gone so well. The movers messed up where the furniture was supposed to go, her siblings are fighting, and her mom's got the stomach flu. Some welcome.

Chapter 22: January 6

  • Alice is starting to come around to the new house now that they've hung curtains and unpacked a few boxes.
  • She has to start school today, though, and she's pretty nervous. She's also jealous that her siblings have already met people their own age while she hasn't, and sees this as a typical reflection of her lot in life.

Chapter 23: Evening, January 6

  • Her first day at school was the worst. No one talked to her the whole day, she faked a headache so she could hide in the nurse's office during lunch, and then she cut her last class to binge on junk food. (It doesn't really sound like she gave anyone much of a chance, does it?)
  • She reflects on the fact that she probably treated every new person at her old school the same exact way, so maybe it's just karma.

Chapter 24: January 7

  • She's still miserable, and now she's bitter about it because it seems like everyone else in her family is adjusting beautifully. The nerve.

Chapter 25: January 14

  • Well, a week has gone by and Alice still feels like an outcast.
  • She's also been comfort-eating, so she's gained five pounds and she's trying to convince herself that she doesn't care (even though it's very evident she cares quite a bit).

Chapter 26: February 8

  • Now she's gained almost fifteen pounds, her hair is stringy and oily, and her face is, as she puts it, "a mess." Alice obviously isn't taking care of herself because she's pretty depressed, and she blames it on the new town and school.

Chapter 27: March 18

  • She finally found a friend—yay. Her name is Gerta, and Alice says she's just as drab, "cloddy and misfitting" as she is. Maybe don't let Gerta hear you describe her that way, Alice?

Chapter 28: April 10

  • Alice is ecstatic that her mom has promised she can spend the summer with her grandparents as long as she gets her grades up. She intends to do just that and starts on a diet ASAP. Because grades and dieting somehow are connected…

Chapter 29: April 20

  • Alice is counting down until school is over so she can go "home," a.k.a. her grandparents'.
  • She's frustrated with her family because it feels like her mom is always on her case, and like she's just never good enough for them.

Chapter 30: May 5

  • She thinks her teachers are idiots and boring.
