One Whole and Perfect Day Chapter 12 Summary

Vanishing Dreams

  • Lily and Marigold are watching a movie on television, but neither of them is really paying attention to it. Lily is still crushing on Daniel Steadman, while Marigold is feeling guilty about the Mrs. Nightingale situation.
  • Marigold really wants to ask her to come stay with their family so her son and Mousy Sarah can go on a honeymoon. For a brief moment, she thinks about asking, but can see that Lily looks angry and upset about something, so she drops the idea.
  • She then starts worrying about Nan's party and her seemingly unrealistic desire to reunite Pop and Lonnie. She tells Lily that she had a dream that a box arrived in the mail with a label that said, "FRAGILE—LONNIE INSIDE." Inside were layers of paper, and then nothing.
  • Lily tells Marigold that she's going to the boarding house to see Lonnie at Nan's request.
  • In an odd display of emotion, Marigold tells Lily that she doesn't know what she'd do without her. This is nice and everything, but Lily just wishes Daniel would say that to her.
