One Whole and Perfect Day Chapter 36 Summary

Five Firth Street, Toongabbie

  • Stan goes in search of the girl in the black dress, looking out at the platforms of every train stop he passes to see if she's there.
  • The train finally stops in Toongabbie, home of Lonnie's boarding house. Stan figures it wouldn't hurt to take a break and see what Lonnie's place looks like.
  • He makes his way to Five Firth Street and stands across the street, looking at the front door. He wonders if he should go in, but tells himself that Lonnie is probably out with Clara.
  • Then he heads into the middle of the road, where he stops again. He immediately becomes nervous that Clara will be there and that she'll be afraid of him because of the Legend of the Ax.
  • A truck comes down the middle of the road and nearly hits him, and after diving out of its path, Stan sees a curtain rustle. Fearing that Lonnie or Clara has seen him, he heads for the hills.
  • Back home, May is talking to Sef about how she can't wait for the party. The two of them dance in the garden the way they used to when May was little and Sef was a real person.
  • On the way home, Stan gets lost and runs into Rose, of all people.
  • She thanks him a ton for giving her the courage to go to Clara's dorm, and is also excited because she thinks Clara may have a boyfriend.
  • Evidently, Clara's parents know nothing of her engagement. Stan is about to ask if the boyfriend's name is Lonnie, but Rose has made a run for her train.
  • At Lonnie's boarding house, Lonnie is stunned to learn that his grandfather came and shyly stood in front of the house.
  • Shyness isn't exactly one of Stan's attributes. When his landlady tells him that Pop was wearing his signature green jacket and detective hat, though, he knows it really was Pop.
