One Whole and Perfect Day Chapter 27 Summary

Seventeen Pairs of Scissors

  • It's time for Lily's second practice with the drama club, but she's hardly excited, even though it means a chance to see Daniel "Stud" Steadman.
  • The truth is, she's feeling super insecure because Tracy Gilman told her she smelled like boiled vegetables (which Lily actually cooked for dinner before school).
  • It's totally unacceptable to meet Daniel smelling like boiled veggies, so Lily goes to the school showers and washes up before practice. Now she just smells like she took a shower at school, but whatever.
  • Here's the weird part, though: Daniel isn't even at play practice. This only makes Lily feel worse—she assumes that he knows she's the prompter and thinks she's so disgusting that he doesn't even want to be around her.
  • She quickly crafts a fatalistic scenario where Tracy Gilman told him about her family and that he should stay away from her (and hold his nose).
  • After practice, Lily goes home and gets her book bag stuck in the screen door and tears her nails in the process of getting untangled.
  • Inside, she goes in search of a pair of nail scissors. When she finally finds them, they break in her hands. And she can't find another pair. Rough day, Lily.
  • Nan calls, but Lily doesn't make it to the phone. She leaves a message that she got rid of Pop's ax and that Lily should call Lonnie and tell him it's safe to come to the party. Lily tries to call Lonnie, but he doesn't answer.
  • She slams down the receiver and gets a glimpse of her red-faced, sobbing self in the mirror. A horrifying realization crosses her mind: She looks exactly like Pop.
