One Whole and Perfect Day Chapter 35 Summary

More Restless Nights

  • Stan can't sleep because he's thinking about Lonnie. It really touched him that after all these years, his grandson remembered his old dog, Ratbag. He wrestles with whether or not to make up with Lonnie.
  • He also can't help thinking about the girl in the black dress he saw on the train. He wonders if her family wrote her off the way he's written off Lonnie, and decides to call Marigold to see if she has any suggestions of who might help her.
  • She gives him some numbers, but says that ultimately, some kids just "fall through the cracks." This phrase only upsets him more.
  • When she hangs up the phone, Lily awakens and asks her mom who called. Marigold explains Pop's situation with the girl on the train.
  • Lily is relieved that Pop hadn't called to yell about Lonnie being engaged to a Chinese girl. She tells her mom that she hopes this fact won't ruin their party, and that even their dysfunctional family deserves a perfect day.
  • Marigold chooses this moment to tell Lily that Mrs. Nightingale is coming to stay the weekend of the party and will be going with them. Right on cue, Lily isn't exactly thrilled.
