Everneath Chapter 11 Summary

  • In the now: Jack finds Nikki during lunch. He says that Jules told him where to look, and then they sit together in silence.
  • They sit together in Mrs. Stone's classroom after school, too, and Jack asks Mrs. Stone if he can close the door to avoid distractions. Nikki gets the sense that he's trying to protect her.
  • Nikki tries to talk to Jack, and he shushes her, telling her he's trying to work. This makes her laugh, which is a first since she's returned.
  • But then Nikki realizes how optimistic this makes Jack, and she can't let him believe that anything is possible, so she starts to leave the room. Jack tries to stop her.
  • Jack says he just wants to know her again. She's silent. He asks if she even remembers him.
  • Nikki decides to lie. She says no, she doesn't remember anything. Jack lets her go. She remembers what happened the last time she let him leave her.
  • In the past (two weeks before the Feed): It's spring break, and Nikki and Jack are saying goodbye because he's about to leave for football camp for two weeks.
  • Nikki thinks Jack is having separation issues. His brother Will has just left for basic training, and Jack also doesn't want to leave her alone the week her mother's killer is up for trial.
  • As they're saying goodbye, Cole walks up and says hi to Nikki. He's there to drop Meredith off.
  • After Jack and Nikki share one last mushy kiss goodbye, Cole asks Nikki if she'd like to come help him make some tee-shirts for the band. She agrees, but feels some weird electrical jolt in the air, as though she's lost something.
  • While working the silkscreen press, Cole asks Nikki to come to the Dead Elvises concert that night. He might also be flirting with her a little.
  • Nikki convinces Jules to come with her, and as they dance to the music, Nikki starts to forget whatever she'd been sad about that morning.
  • Jules takes off because she's not feeling well, and Cole offers Nikki a ride home. Suddenly Nikki remembers how Lacey and Jack used to go out. Why is Nikki thinking about that now? Surely she trusts Jack.
