Everneath Chapter 7 Summary

  • In the now: A week passes and Nikki is still thinking about what happened in the convenience store.
  • Mrs. Stone asks Nikki what she's doing for her thesis paper, and Nikki answers that she's writing a modern-day myth about how there's no such thing as redemption, and no heroes.
  • Jack asks Nikki if she really believes that, but she just says it doesn't matter what she believes.
  • Their conversation turns to memories, and Nikki thinks about how she remembers everything: the first time he called her his girlfriend, the first time he said he loved her, and so on.
  • In the past (two months before the Feed): Jules asks Nikki if she's going to celebrate her three-month anniversary with Jack. This is a Big Deal because Jack has never admitted to having a girlfriend before Nikki.
  • Next, Jules asks Nikki if tonight's going to be the night and Nikki blushes, saying no.
  • Nikki goes to find Jack, and sees Lacey standing inappropriately close to him—ick—but as soon as Nikki walks up, Jack ignores Lacey and rushes to hug her.
  • Jack asks if they're celebrating, since Jules reminded him that it was their three-month anniversary; Nikki nervously says she's fine not doing anything.
  • Jack drives her home and suggests going night skiing. Nikki thinks that sounds like a safe bet, but then he tells her to bring a change of clothes since they can go to his uncle's lodge for hot chocolate afterward.
  • Nikki's mom never had the sex talk with her before dying, so Nikki feels clueless. They ski until 10:00PM, and then Nikki changes into a dorky fluffy outfit while Jack tries to start a fire.
  • Jack spit-takes hot chocolate when he sees Nikki's dorky outfit. Then he reassures her that he doesn't want to push her in any way.
  • Jack says that his history with girls isn't a secret, and he's not proud of it—but he doesn't want to mess things up with Nikki. And he tells her he loves her.
