Character Analysis

Let's Go to War

Meet yet another of Florian's children. Justin is a thin dude, pale with blond hair, violet eyes, and a really violent streak. Florian compares him to an angel, but he's got anger issues, probably because he watched his dad get hanged. This trauma created a hardened warrior, which is clearly seen in Justin's eagerness to go into battle. As you can see in the following passage, he's eager to fight and ends up shooting enemy soldiers even when he doesn't have to:

He had unslung one of his muskets. His eyes shone with a terrible joy. Before Theo could stop him, Justin flung himself to the cobbles and began firing at the soldiers. (17.51)

Nothing says stone-cold killer quite like "eyes shone with a terrible joy." Lucky for him, he's linked up with Florian, a dude who's all about violent revolution.

Loyal Lad

Justin isn't exactly all fire, though. Above everything, he has deeply sentimental ties to Florian—he cares greatly about what Florian thinks of him, and almost cries when Flo insults him. His loyalty is perhaps never clearer, though, than when he declares it:

Justin turned his eyes on Theo. "If he asked me to, I'd die for him." (13.33)

No two ways about it, Shmoopsters: Justin will do anything for his leader.
