I Am the Messenger Part 3 / Chapter 8 Summary

clown street. chips. the doorman. and me

  • It's hot and sticky. Ed's driving around in his cab, and sees Audrey in hers. He tells her a guy's waiting for her, so she tells him to have a good night; he thinks about how pretty she is.
  • After work, Ed and the Doorman head on over to 23 Clown Street, which is actually an Italian restaurant.
  • The Doorman and Ed eat greasy chips (fries) as they watch across the street. They do the same thing the next night.
  • Audrey visits Ed one night and asks about the cards. He fills her in and then she gets to her point: she misses him. He's different now that he's getting these cards in the mail.
  • Audrey wants them to be okay, and Ed thinks about how he wants that too, but he can't promise it anymore.
  • Ed asks about what she's been up to. She's with this guy Simon now, and they have been pretty busy; she admits she feels empty when he leaves. Ed thinks about how Audrey always comes running to him after she's with a guy.
  • When Audrey asks Ed if he hates her, he says yes.
  • Later on a man comes to Ed with a message: Show up at the restaurant tomorrow at 8:00PM. Don't be late. Also, cut down on the chips.
  • Audrey stays over that night; she sleeps with her legs on Ed, and he likes it. Then he dreams about the people he's helped so far.
